"It Began With A Page" by Kyo Maclear Illustrated by Julie Morstad

This is the story of Gyo Fujikawa. Her family immigrated to California from Japan looking for a better life, but Gyo often felt invisible. When she began to illustrate children’s books she made diversity her mandate. When “Babies” came out in 1963 children of all backgrounds and skin colours were represented for the first time, setting the patch for a more inclusive world. Maclear and Morstad have so throughly honoured Fujikawa in this picture book that I am certain it will fill your heart the way it has mine.
